Equipment Comparison Tables (GBA)

From Golden Sun Universe

The lists on this page are designed to streamline the process of comparing equippable items in the GBA duology. In Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age there is a split between between "warrior-style Adepts" and "caster-style Adepts". Therefore, this page is divided between the two types of playable characters. The warriors consist of Isaac, Garet, Felix and Piers and the casters consist of Ivan, Mia, Jenna and Sheba.

  • Warrior-style Adepts are consistently capable of wielding Long Swords, Light Blades, Axes, and Maces, and they equip Body Armor, Helms, and Shields. They are uniformly incapable of wielding Staffs and Ankhs or equipping Robes, Circlets, and Bracelets.
  • Caster-style Adepts are consistently capable of wielding Staffs and Ankhs, and they equip Robes, Circlets, and Bracelets. In addition, the casters are further split based on weapons, with the "cleric-style Adepts" Mia and Sheba capable of wielding Maces and the "mage-knight-style Adepts" Ivan and Jenna capable of wielding Light Blades. For ease of reading, this extra split is not reflected in the weapon table. Caster-style Adepts are uniformly incapable of wielding Long Swords and Axes or equipping Body Armor, Helms, and Shields.
  • Lastly, there are equippable items that can be wield by both groups. Those include Clothing, Hats, Gloves, Shirts, Boots and Rings.

  • "Found": This item can generally be found within one of the chests of the listed game and is one-of-a-kind, but sometimes these can be received from inspecting the world map itself (such as the Turtle Boots).
  • "Forge": This item can be acquired randomly whenever appropriate Forgeable items are brought to Sunshine the Blacksmith in Yallam in Golden Sun: The Lost Age, and therefore can be acquired repeatedly.
  • "Event": This item is received in a scripted event that triggers in the game itself.
  • "Drop": This item is dropped randomly by a defeated monster, and therefore can be acquired repeatedly.

Body slot

The following is a list of the Clothing and Body Armor that the Adepts Isaac, Garet, Felix, and Piers can equip in the Body Armor slot of an Adept's equipment. Since all three of the game's female party members are casters, any general Clothing exclusive to females (namely Faery Vest and Floral Dress) are not listed here because none of the four warriors can equip them.

Weapon slot

The following is a list of Light Blades, Maces, Staffs, and Ankhs that the Adepts Ivan, Mia, Jenna and Sheba can equip in the Weapon slot of an Adept's equipment. While Ivan and Jenna cannot equip Maces and Mia and Sheba cannot equip Light Blades, this list merges both options for ease of reading. Weapons with an unleash effect align all damage dealt with a singular element, applying resistance as appropriate. In addition, certain weapons cause all basic attacks to align with a singular element; these unleashes and weapons are marked with the corresponding elemental icon before the attack value.

Best-in-slot considerations

There isn't a single item that is all-around best-in-slot. It depends on the character and their role in your party line-out. There are a couple of common statistics people tend to focus in when decided what to equip. Keep in mind this level of optimization isn't really necessary for a casual play-through. If you go for the armors with the highest defense and weapons with the highest attack you still end with some of the best items. Which tends to be enough to beat the game with.

Considering Statistics

Favored Statistics

Most people like to focus on the following stats. These are the easiest items to make builds for characters for in combination with there class/role.

  • Unleash Chance - Unleash Effects are some of the most powerful abilities, rivaling the stronger Psynergies in the game. Normally you can a 35% chance to Unleash such an effect, but there are items that increase this chance. Focusing on these items makes Unleashes a very reliable way to deal a lot of damage.
  • Psynergy Regen (PP Regen) - If you want to get the most out of casting Psynergy without using items. One item focused on PP Regen generally prevent running out of Psynergy during longer combats. Two items enable endless casting for all but the most expensive Psynergies.
  • Elemental Power - Increases elemental damage by a small percentage and healing by a flat amount.
    • The cap is 200 Power, so there is a limit to how effective stacking is. Characters have a base of 104 in their innate Element and around 77 in the other three elements. Setting a Djinni also add 5 Power based on their element.
    • The effective of focusing on a single element can be limited by the Resistance of the boss. You encounter slightly more bosses resistant to Mars, and slightly less bosses with resistance to Jupiter. Venus and Mercury are in the middle between these two.
    • Elemental Power also increases the damage of Unleashes, offensive Djinn and Summons.

Situational Statistics

These are items that are more for specifics builds or bosses.

  • Attack - For normal attacks and Unleashes 2 Attack add 1 Damage, so it inferior to Unleash Chance. However, on Physical Psynergy (such as Quick Strike) this increases the base damage before multiplies from said Psynergy.
    • Also boosts the damage of offensive Djinn.
  • Luck - Luck decreases the chance you will be affected by a negative Status Condition. For every 2 Luck you have, status effects are 3% less likely to affect you. Items with luck are rare, but having a luck rating of 40 or higher provides immunity to Poison, Venom, Haunt, Death Curse and HP being instantly reduced to 1. Even 15 Luck reduces that these effects affect you by a considerable amount.
  • Agility - Agility determines the turn order, more Agility ensures you can act before the enemies. Be warned, as Agility doesn't add defense but also doesn't directly contribute to ending a combat faster, consider Agility in moderation. 269 Agility ensures you go before all bosses or 242 Agility ensures you go before all but the strongest boss.
  • Resistance - Resistance decreases incoming damage of Psynergy by a small percentage. Each point of resistance offers a 0.25% damage reduction against that Element.
    • The cap is 200 Resistance, so there is a limit to how effective stacking is. Characters have a base of 114 in their innate Element and around 87 in the other three elements. Setting a Djinni also add 5 Power based on their element.**
    • The effective of focusing on a single element can be limited by the Psynergies of the boss. Most bosses tend to use two or more elements. You encounter more attacks that are Mars or Venus aligned, some that are Jupiter aligned and only a couple that are Mercury aligned.

Niche Statistics

These are stats people rarely focus on, because in general the numbers are to low to make a significant different. They still add benefits, so there is are no downsides on using these items.

  • Hit Points - Most items offers between 5 and 30 HP. In the End-game attacks deal hundreds of damage.
  • HP Regen - Most items offers between 8 and 20 HP per round. In many combats and especially during bosses you can get hit multiple times per round, whereas HP Regen only heals once per round. This means HP Regen rarely offers a lot of benefit to offset damage.
  • PP - Most items offers between 8 & 30 PP. The end-game expensive Psynergies start around between 20 and end around 40 PP. This means most items barely allow you to cast a single extra Psynergy in combat. Compared to 8 PP Regen which allows an extra spells every 3 to 5 turns. Which can be 2-3 spells in a longer combat.
  • Defense - A single point of defense prevents 0,5 damage, so dropping 30 defense means enemies deal 15 more damage Physical Damage. Like Hit Points, not a big number in the end game.
  • Add to that in the late-game you will be encountering less enemies that use Physical Attacks. For most bosses there is a 1 in 3 chance to use a attack that gets reduced by Defense. The last boss doesn't even use Psychical Attacks.

Summary

Comparing warriors and casters' options for the body slot:

  • All Adepts can gain extreme resistance to Mercury attacks and heavy Mercury Power with the repeatedly droppable Triton's Ward. They can also gain heavy resistances to all but the Venus element with the sole Storm Gear that can be transferred from Golden Sun.
  • While all Adepts can give themselves a very heavy Agility boost via the repeatedly won Wild Coat, only casters can alternatively equip Feathered Robes for slightly decreased Agility ratings in exchange for cranked-up Jupiter Power and Resistance values.
  • Warriors are missing the heavy PP Regen, HP Regen, and Luck-boosting options for the body slot that casters are afforded with the individual Mysterious Robe and Iris Robe pieces.
  • Warriors have the Xylion Armor available to significantly increase their raw Attack rating, whereas there are virtually no body-slot pieces for casters that improve Attack rating.
  • Warriors have the Valkyrie Mail as a one-of-a-kind, exclusive improved version of the Mythril Clothes that any Adept can otherwise make use of to make it more likely they will Unleash with each of their weapon strikes.
  • Casters have opportunities to individually increase their Jupiter and Mars Power values by 20 with Feathered Robes and Ardagh Robes, respectively, whereas warriors can increase all four elemental power values at once by a more modest 10 points with the mid-game-level Planet Armor.

Comparing warriors and casters' options for the hand slot:

  • All Adepts can heavily improve both their attack ratings and Unleash ratings with the repeatedly winnable Riot Gloves. They can alternatively devote their hand slots to Mars Power with the immense 40 Mars Power of the repeatedly forgeable Big Bang Gloves.
  • While both genres can improve their Jupiter Power using their hand slots with Aerial Gloves, only casters have access to Leda's Bracelets as a version without any of the Agility increase but with an even stronger Jupiter Power increase.
  • Casters have Clear Bracelets and, less significantly, up to two Spirit Armlets to increase their Mercury Power ratings, with the Spirit Armlets also giving similarly slight Venus Power boosts.
  • Any one Adept can equip the one Spirit Gloves of The Lost Age for a max PP-meter boost, but only casters can equip the one Jester's Armlet that offers an even higher PP boost.
  • While any Adept can improve their effective survivability with the heavy HP increase of the repeatedly forgeable Titan Gloves, only warriors can equip the Cosmos Shield to improve their survivability via a solid resistance boost in every element. They can alternatively specialize in Mars resistance with Flame Shields, or even give up a lot of defense for a heavy Jupiter resistance boost from the Fujin Shield. Casters cannot use their hand slots to shore up their resistances whatsoever.

Comparing warriors and casters' options for the head slot:

  • Any number of Adepts can equip the repeatedly winnable Crown of Glory for very strong end-of-turn PP regeneration, but any and all of the casters among them would, by definition, prefer the even better Psychic Circlet that can be repeatedly forged.
  • A similar scenario occurs with the use of the two potential Jeweled Crowns for their 5-point Luck boosts, which up to two Adepts (warriors included) can equip, whereas any number of casters can equip directly superior Brilliant Circlets for their 10-point luck boosts.
  • Casters, unexpectedly, are the only genre of Adepts who can use their head slots to give themselves very high 15-point Attack boosts via the repeatedly dropped Berserker Band; warriors would have to make do with either the rather early-game Thorn Crown for its 8 Attack points or the cursed Fear Helm, which still only offers 10 Attack for the trouble.
  • On the other hand, much of an Adept's physical damage output comes from their equipped weapon's Unleash and whether they can consistently proc the effect with each strike, and the warriors clearly have the edge with the repeatedly forgeable Mythril Helms they can equip for 12% Unleash increases. (In addition, the transferrable Warrior's Helm, though only offering a 10% Unleash increase and significantly less defense, also offers Venus Power and Resistance bonuses.) Casters can only make do with either the one transferrable Lucky Cap from Golden Sun, which gives an 8% Unleash increase, or the forgeable Demon Circlet for its far superior defense and Unleash bonuses. This is a strong option if you are willing to assign your sole Cleric's Ring to a caster Adept.
  • Warriors have essentially three options for headpieces that improve survivability, compared to the utter lack of survivability-oriented headpieces for casters: HP-regenerating Gloria Helms, Max-HP-increasing Millenium Helms, and Mars-and-Mercury-resistant Dragon Helms.
