Kaocho and Ouroboros

Kaocho, town (msg_ccho_town)

The armies of Kaocho have been gone a long time. I wonder when they'll be home. We've heard rumors about Sana that say our homeland has become a peaceful place. I wish we could say the same in Kaocho. I want to go home to Sana. I hated it there with Emperor Ko on the throne. But I hear that it's a very different place now. It's a little quiet here in Kaocho, since our army is off on a mission in Ei-Jei right now. Most merchants and farmers are part of the army, so it's like a ghost town right now. So King Wo has us at war again? Last time, when he sent our soldiers to Passaj, they came back in bad shape. King Wo and the founders of Kaocho came from our homeland of Sana. They brought us here with them. Tea Shop —CLOSED Tea Shop —CLOSED King Wo has left Kaocho on some all-important mission! No wonder it's quieter here. My dad's off with the soldiers right now. I wish he'd come back home so I could see him. Head inside. King Wo is waiting. King Wo wants Adepts. He'll do anything to get his hands on warriors who can use Psynergy. But he can't find any! Do I smell a Kaocho dumpling? Those bundles of tastiness always give me a burst of energy... Would you like to give him a Kaocho dumpling? Well, that's terrible! To be within arm's reach of one of those Kaocho dumplings... And then be denied?! I think I'll just sit here and stew about that forever. You must be justly rewarded for your morsel of charity! Here, take my fish-watching spot! Good-bye, dumpling buddies! I'm sure that my abilities would be of help. Halt! Who goes there?! No one may enter. Be on your way. I sing this store's praises so much, you'd think I was paid to do it! But that's not true...honest! Mixing all those herbs and potions would be too difficult for me. I couldn't keep them all straight! King Wo must be away from the palace. Everyone is FAR less stressed. Wo wants to take over Passaj and Ayuthay. King Wo is more than hungry for victory. He's voracious! The shops in Sana are said to be better than this one. But I think there's great stuff in here! Sana is known for its herbal medicine. This place is run by a Sanan herbalist, so I came to take a look. I'd like to start up a shop like this, so I came on a little spy mission. Don't tell the herbalist, though. Rumors are flying! People say King Wo has left the palace with that beautiful woman. He's apparently smitten with her too—and he doesn't plan on coming back here anytime soon! The Kaocho army has two generals, Ku-Tsung and Ku-Embra. They're our most fearsome warriors! The Kaocho army was sent away on a campaign. That's why everything's dead quiet here. Have you come to be soldiers? Too bad, because the Kaocho army is afield right now. You can't join while it's gone! Why not?! If you please King Wo, he could make you into generals! You'd be rich, I tell you! All the dumplings made here are really fresh. Oh, what pillowy, juicy goodness! I swoon for the rice dishes here, but sometimes I dally with the dumplings. Really, who can choose? Too busy...gumming food...to talk. He didn't wear his dentures today. I can't take him anywhere. This is a soup of the lightest broth and crunchy noodles. Eternal Life in Angara, Vol 1: The former Sanan ruler, Emperor Ko, sought the secret of eternal life before he met his end. King Wo, always trying to live up to Ko's example, now seeks the same, for why shouldn't military geniuses live forever?! It is said that a ruler named Babi, who once ruled the city called Tolbi, knew the secret of eternal life but took it to his grave. The Long History of Sana: Though the ambitious Emperor Ko founded Sana, the people of Sana have a longer history. Legend says that the Sanans lived even as far back as the ancient times, when they were allied with the ancient peoples. In fact, the Endless Wall that stretches across part of Angara is said to have been built in this golden age. King Wo has left Kaocho on a secret mission. But I know what it is. Want me to tell you? He's looking for a way to threaten his rival, Emperor Unan of Sana. The emperor's brother, Kuan, died in recent years, leaving behind two children in Morgal. King Wo wants to find those children and use them as hostages to force Emperor Unan to do his bidding. That strange woman who has been seen here helped him concoct this plan. Then away he went! What, not curious about world events? That doesn't seem so safe these days. A ways back, King Wo and Emperor Unan of Sana, our original homeland, were at each other's throats. That was when tragedy struck in our colonies in Morgal—which is in the northern half of the continent, if you didn't know. The emperor was too busy dealing with King Wo, so he didn't have time to put down a revolution that flared up in Morgal. Any Sanans living in Morgal had to run for their lives. That's how the empire lost control of Morgal. Could you please find my grandchild and give her a letter? Please, I'm relying on your kindness! This is sweet-and-sour pork that absolutely shimmers with pineapple sweetness. What a delight! My dearest one says that he'll be home soon, once Kaocho finishes its work. Kaocho was forged in war. Most of our people are soldiers who left our homeland, Sana, to come here. But many people miss life in Sana. When the emperor of Sana passed away, King Wo marched back to our homeland and tried to seize command. He failed to take it from Emperor Unan. Oh, how Emperor Ko must be looking down upon our Wo with disappointment! King Wo was one of two men in line to become the emperor of our Sanan homeland. After Emperor Ko expired, Wo expected to take over his war empire. But Unan instead took over... a scholar, of all people! I can't understand King Wo failing to take over the empire. How could he lose to a measly scholar like Unan? I haven't seen my dad in a while. He's a farmer that got roped into marching on Ayuthay. He can barely handle a sword, but you should see what he can do with a plow! I saw my dad trying to get a handle on using weapons. But he couldn't hurt a fly! A gentle soul makes for a loving husband. That's the secret to our happy home. The oven is immaculate. It must not be used much. It's a tofu dish that's so hot, it burns tongues from across the room! A letter? My dear old woman, your sent love has brought us love in return. [Grandmother] We can finally rest in peace, my dear. [Grandfather] Peace at last. Hi, Grandma! How are things? I'm fine. But I miss you! Well, until next time... P.S. I've included a little reward for those hardworking warriors. They deserve it! OK, bye now! To move from Sana to Kaocho, and then finally come to this? My life took a wrong turn somewhere. Did I get finished off by a monster? I must have! I would never go outside looking like this... I had my door open to cool this place. That's how the monsters got in, I guess. Wish I'd had some cold tea instead... Good thing Kaocho got all our littlest ones away in time. There's a happy ending, at least! Who knew that monsters were smart enough to open a door? Talk about unwanted visitors... King Wo could lead an army but not a country, I guess. Wish I'd known that...a little earlier. Oh, what terrible sorrow. Never to have heard from my grandchild again... I do the cooking around here, plus all the cleaning. So people need to cut me some slack if I screw up any dishes.

Kaocho Palace (msg_ccho_cas)

So YOU must be the Adepts that we're expecting today! It's time for your audience with the king! The Kaocho army is too weak to fully conquer Ayuthay. Our soldiers will come home soon enough with their tails between their legs. Kaocho's best generals are there, but they can do only so much when their soldiers are mostly farmers! I see that you're all Adepts. Let me welcome you with a piece of wisdom. Absolute conquest takes patience. Once we've seized the southern shores of Ei-Jei, maybe we'll name this entire region after King Wo! I came here from Sana when I heard about the ancient treasures in the labyrinth below this palace. But I haven't laid eyes on a single one! And neither has anyone else! It's not that people return empty handed from the labyrinth... It's that they don't return at ALL. This door leads to the throne room. King Wo is waiting for you, Adepts. Grovel before his greatness. King Wo awaits his new batch of Adepts. But if that's not who YOU are... remove yourselves from his palace! When King Wo came here from Sana to found Kaocho, our Emperor Ko was still alive. Back in those days, our old home was still the strongest country in Angara. Just as this new palace was finished, Emperor Ko died! Ever since then, Sana has become cowardly and weak. When the emperor of Sana passed away, King Wo should have gotten his throne. But Unan stole it from him! Now King Wo will do anything to take it back from him. Even sell his soul to the devil! And who could blame him?! Ruins are sacred places, yet King Wo dared to build this palace upon one. I'm worried that we'll all suffer the consequences. The labyrinth down those stairs was built by the ancient ancestors of the Ayuthay. We can't figure out how to penetrate its mysteries. When we were on friendly terms with the Ayuthay, we asked for any insights. They refused to part with their secrets. Adepts and the Ancient Times: The modern Adepts appear to be the key to understanding the ancient ruins. For the Adepts are descendants of the Jenei, the ancient people who built the civilization that fell into ruin. Furthermore, as Alchemy returns to the world, we run the risk of being dominated by the Adepts once more. Kaocho Military Dispatch 2: The lands around the Ayuthay castle fell swiftly to Kaocho soldiers—almost too swiftly. King Wo's generals have not been able to enter the castle itself, however. There is more to Ayuthay than meets the eye. Kaocho Military Dispatch 1: We thought that Passaj would quickly fall to the military might of Kaocho. But Passaj launched a counterattack based on the might of their extreme heights. Shamefully, we lost the battle. [King Wo] My new Adepts are late! You promised that they would be in Kaocho by now. [Chalis] So I did, King Wo. They will arrive at any moment. [Kan-Shuku] His Majesty does not wait for any man, Chalis. This is impertinent! [King Wo] Kan-Shuku is correct, Chalis. So these Adepts had better be worth my precious time. [Matthew] ?! [Karis] I think they're talking about us! [Tyrell] That King Wo guy there is a real creep. [Rief] But what does he want with us?! [Meisa] If I may speak, my king? The Adepts will be worth their weight in gold, if they can breach the Ouroboros. [Kan-Shuku] That's what Chalis has promised, Meisa, but I still don't know why we trust this foreigner. [Chalis] My dear Kan-Shuku, I know far more than you ever will. [Kan-Shuku] How DARE you! [Chalis] Spare me, Kan-Shuku, and do try to look impressive. We have guests. [King Wo] Finally! My Adepts have arrived! [Kan-Shuku] What? And now you summon your own guards, Chalis! You go too far! [Meisa] Your personal soldiers are quite...unusual, Chalis. [Matthew] ?! [Karis] He looks like one of those soldiers who attacked us below the Konpa ruins! [Tyrell] Like one of Blados's men! [Rief] Get away from us, villain! [Chalis] Well done, men. Now, out of my sight. [King Wo] Now, Chalis, tell me exactly who our little visitors ARE. [Kan-Shuku] Let me do the honors, Your Majesty! These are Adepts! [Chalis] You bumbling toadie, Kan-Shuku—you really know nothing at all. These are quite...exceptional Adepts. [Tyrell] So, you're Chalis? [Chalis] They certainly are, Your Majesty. These Adepts have the power to fulfill your greatest ambitions. But which will it be first: to get the relic from the Ouroboros or help your army in Ayuthay? [King Wo] Ah, the relic...or military victory? I've waited so long for both that I can hardly decide! [Rief] The Ouroboros? An army in Ayuthay? They think we're here to help them with something! [Tyrell] They're idiots if they think that! Right, Matthew? [Tyrell] I don't know if I'd be going with the flow right now, if I were you! These guys seem evil! [Tyrell] Yeah, I'm furious too! Who do these guys think they are, demanding our help?! No, these Adepts won't be able to resist once they hear of the powerful artifact in the Ouroboros. [Kan-Shuku] You clearly aren't paying attention, Chalis. That sounded like "no" to me. [Chalis] Have you Adepts heard of a relic found in the Ouroboros below? It's a mask of considerable power and importance. [Rief] Hmm...a mask...? I wonder what more they know about it...? [Chalis] Ahhh... So have I enticed you? [Chalis] Oh, I don't believe that for a moment. You must be a little curious? [Chalis] Of course. For clever Adepts are always seeking out such things, are they not? [King Wo] But if you get your hands on that mask, it's all mine! [Karis] Why would we go to all this trouble for HIM?! If we get that mask, we're going to hang onto it! [King Wo] Don't even consider disobeying me, Adepts. I must have that relic. It is the key to the power that can help me wage war like never before! [Kan-Shuku] Your Highness, may I suggest that we send the Adepts to Ayuthay first? The mask may take too much time. Our generals are in need of urgent assistance to complete our siege of the castle. [Chalis] These Adepts could tip the scales in Kaocho's favor. Ayuthay will finally fall. [King Wo] I give this plan my seal of approval! Write it up, then give the letter to that Matthew person there! [System Message] The letter is quickly written...and completed. [Meisa] King Wo, if I may beg you to listen to the letter, to ensure it lives up to the measure of Your Majesty! [King Wo] Yes, yes. Get on with it then. [Meisa] To Ku-Tsung, general of the Kaocho army: The courier of this letter, Matthew, has pledged his loyalty to our royal cause. This loyal servant and his companions have sworn to use their Psynergy to help you crush Ayuthay. —Wo, King of Kaocho [King Wo] Well...I think "annihilate Ayuthay" would have captured my sentiment better. But, yes, the letter is fine. [Tyrell] Hold on a second! We're not just going to be used like this, are we?! [Tyrell] Just because you took the letter doesn't mean we have to fight their war. [Tyrell] I'm not blaming you for taking the letter. I'm just saying we don't have to fight in their war! [Tyrell] Yeah, this is a sad situation, all right. He can count us out. We're not going to be pawns in his war! [Tyrell] Yeah, there's no way any of us are going to fight in his war! I mean, I like fighting...but not for him. [King Wo] How dare you! Who are you fleas who question ME, the will of Kaocho! Are you telling me you Adepts refuse to fetch MY mask and serve the generals in Ayuthay?! [Chalis] Perhaps I was wrong, Your Majesty. Maybe these Adepts won't bend their knee to Kaocho after all. [Chalis] They don't realize that pledging loyalty to the great King Wo is an honor. [Chalis] And they clearly don't know what that sort of rebellion earns you around here... [Chalis] So Adepts, you want to explore the Ouroboros? To steal its relic for yourselves, perhaps? [Karis] What are they going to do, summon the guards? [Tyrell] They're about to pull something, that's for sure. [Rief] What do you intend to do with us? [Kan-Shuku] Dispose of the garbage! [Matthew] ?! [Karis] Er...garbage?! [Tyrell] Uh, shouldn't we run or something? [Rief] Your Majesty, can't we talk this through? [Meisa] The time for talk is over. You have vexed King Wo. [Kan-Shuku] Now, Your Highness? [King Wo] Away with them! [Kan-Shuku] Your Majesty, that rabble will trouble you no more. [Meisa] Sigh. Now we have to find a new batch of Adepts to help us breach the Ouroboros. [King Wo] Oh, how much longer must I wait NOW?! [King Wo] What say you, Chalis? [Chalis] In truth, I haven't given up on them, King Wo. [Kan-Shuku] What do you mean, Chalis? [Chalis] True Adepts have a way of proving their worth, Kan-Shuku. [Chalis] And I think that those Adepts are diamonds in the rough. If they survive the fall, they'll soon learn that they can't truly enter the Ouroboros—not yet anyway. Serving you in Ayuthay would have polished them up. That would give them just the strength they need. [Chalis] I suspect that isn't the last we'll see of those Adepts. They'll come back to Kaocho when they're ready, now that they know what's in the Ouroboros. King Wo is always busy. I never get an audience with him! Nobody has come this way. They all just vanished from the castle.

[Karis] Where...are we? [Rief] I would guess that we're somewhere within the Ouroboros labyrinth. [Tyrell] My aching back! [Tyrell] Why would they let us down here anyway? We made it clear that we're not about to hand over any relics to them! [Karis] Maybe they thought that we wouldn't survive the fall. But if they're desperate to get that mask, why would they risk it? Hmm... I bet they're playing a dirty trick on us. They probably hope to trap us here, with NO way to get the relic... And no way to escape either! Well, we're not going to rot here. Let's find our way out of this trap. Maybe there's another way into the RIGHT part of the Ouroboros! Let's find it! I heard you didn't get rid of those evil spirits. The generals were very upset at you. The generals were furious that you never followed through with those exorcisms in Ayuthay! I haven't seen our generals for a while. I wonder where Ku-Tsung and Ku-Embra have gone to? The water level here dropped, but now it's normal again. But who would play havoc with the pond? Looks like another big day of doing nothing. I don't like war much, but a battle would break the monotony. All we've done since we got to Ayuthay is watch the grass grow. Not a bad way to earn a living! Generals Ku-Tsung and Ku-Embra are in the temple across the pond. Your letter says to report to them. Give your letter to the generals when you see them. But don't waste their time, whatever you do! Hey, you're the warriors who betrayed Kaocho! I don't talk to backstabbers. The generals want to speak with you. Go see them. [Amiti] Legends say that our well once fed waters far beyond Ayuthay, to all Ei-Jei—even all the way to Harapa! [Paithos] The Alchemy Forge up in Passaj once pumped the waters. Their machine is dead—and so Ei-Jei is dry and dying. [Amiti] The machines are named as a pair, you see. [Amiti] When both machines are running, they work in harmony to benefit this whole part of the world! [Paithos] I had placed all my hopes on that mysterious Adept. But he has been gone so long... [Paithos] So I had all but given up on the Jenei prophecy. Until I heard of a new group of Adepts at our door! It is under Kaocho, but it's impossible to find its true entrance, let alone do what must be done to enter. [Amiti] We have heard that it's possible to reverse the flow of our Alchemy Well. [Paithos] I'm sure that the moment you see it, you'll know exactly what to do, Adepts! You start going a little batty when you spend too long cramped up with one of these Alchemy Machines. Oh! Never seeing the sun or moon, or even feeling a single breeze. This is no way to live. I can't get the noise out of my head, cooped up here with that crummy machine! I'm sure everyone appreciates the safety this place affords us. But the complaints are getting out of hand. Maybe it's better if I don't hear about what's happening outside... I wonder if I'll ever be able to go outside. I can't imagine never pulling fruit down from a tree ever again. Some people can't stand being near the Alchemy Well, but I think it's fun in here. Like a playground! What kind of job is this for a guard, just standing around? I'm getting a backache! There's not enough in here to keep my mind occupied. I'm going a little stir-crazy. I always thought the Alchemy Well was soothing. But oh, my poor ears! That machine makes SUCH a racket! People always said that this room was beautifully illuminated. Me, I'd rather see the sun again. I hope that someday I can go outside again. I'd like to have my own adventures! Ayuthay grew some of the best fruits in the world. Now I can only dream about eating such tasty treats. People complain that I'm just causing trouble down here. But what else is there to do?!
