Lalivero
Lalivero (ラリベロの町 Lalibelo Town) is a village in northeastern Gondowan town that is visited near the end of Golden Sun. It is located on the other side of Gondowan's Nol River, which forces the player to have completed all story events in Tolbi in northwestern Gondowan before heading through Suhalla Desert and Suhalla Gate in the direction of the village.
Lalivero is located just north of the ancient Venus Lighthouse and just south of Babi Lighthouse, a similar tower that Tolbi's ruler, Babi, is forcing the residents to build for him. It is the hometown of Sheba, a future party member in Golden Sun: The Lost Age whom Babi had kept captive in Tolbi in order to coerce its residents into building his tower. When Saturos takes her captive for his own purposes while heading to Venus Lighthouse, Isaac's party pursues him to save her on behalf of her foster father, the village mayor Faran.
Lalivero is the hub settlement the player can use to prepare for what collectively counts as the final stretch of dungeon-like content in the game: three connected dungeons in a row, starting with Babi Lighthouse, continuing south through the Tunnel Ruins that run underneath the town itself, and ending in the true "dungeon" portion of Venus Lighthouse. Lalivero features weapon and armor shops that offer the strongest equipment among vendors in the game.
While mentioned in The Lost Age, it is not possible to revist the town while sailing the Eastern Sea, despite its proximity to the coast. The only mention of it in Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, taking place 30 years later, is in the Sun Saga retrospective on the events of the previous duology.

Once the player has received instructions from Babi in his palace at Tolbi to head to the area around Lalivero and Venus Lighthouse in eastern Gondowan, the guards stationed at Suhalla Gate will no longer block you off from heading through in that direction. The player's route east toward Lalivero will force them to pass by the "surface-level exit" of Venus Lighthouse, and there are two mandatory tasks inside the structure that are best completed now: finding the Carry Stone, and getting one of two configurations of lights to light up in a statue room. Both will be needed when it is time to depart Lalivero for the final dungeons of the game's story.
Initial visit
When you first enter Lalivero, a cutscene with Tolbian soldiers lying defeated at the front gate explains that Saturos' company came through the town earlier with Sheba now an unwilling part of their numbers; they headed toward Babi Lighthouse just north of the village, evidently interested in the Tunnel Ruins underneath it. When you are done stocking up on gear at Lalivero, you will have to head north to complete three connected dungeons in a row: Babi Lighthouse, Tunnel Ruins, and Venus Lighthouse's main dungeon portion.
Being the final storyline settlement in the game, Lalivero's shops constitute the final "tier" of purchasable goods, with Lunpa at the opposite end of the overworld running a close second. Its armor shop introduces the Steel Armor and Knight's Helm as common pieces of armor, and opening its Artifacts menu adds the Magical Cassock, Jeweled Crown, Mirrored Shield, and Spirit Armlet to the menu shared between all armor shopkeepers. The weapon shopkeeper just right of him similarly adds the Silver Blade, Swift Sword, Righteous Mace, and Crystal Rod to the weapon artifacts menu. As for the item shop, located just left of the Sanctum at the northeast corner of town, it adds a Potion, Psy Crystal, and Water of Life to the general item artifacts menu.
The most valuable collectible is the Mars Djinni Torch on a roof at the north end of town. To reach it, climb up the ladder inside the armory onto its roof and hop right onto the yellow wall surrounding the town, and follow along it counter-clockwise until you reach the northwest structure's roof. Hop right from the lower-right corner of this roof and climb up the vine at the Inn building to reach Torch. Another ladder leading up to a building's roof is found inside the building at the southwest corner of the village (the residence of the village mayor Faran and Sheba, his adoptive daughter). This lets you hop left onto the perimeter wall, and running along it to the southeast corner of town lets you climb down ivy to a chest containing the Warrior's Helm.
At least four other valuable items can be collected during your brief time in Lalivero. Examining the obelisk-like structure in the center of town gives you a Psy Crystal. The smaller residence conjoined with the lower-right part of the armory building hides a Lucky Medal in the center barrel against the right wall. Another Lucky Medal is found in the second floor of the Inn, in the lone barrel in the left bedroom. Finally, while you are climbing rooftops to reach the Djinni, you can hop onto the roof of the northeast Sanctum, hop left from its southwest corner onto the building with the item shop, and inspect the upper-left of the three jars on the roof for a Water of Life.
Whenever you want to leave Venus Lighthouse's main dungeon during your exploration, you can transition into its earlier exit portion and step out of Venus Lighthouse's icon in the overworld, but this is a one-way trip each time. This is useful because toggling the arrangement of lights in the exit portion's statue room toggles the available route south through the Tunnel Ruins, and both routes feature side rooms that contain one useful treasure each: the Asura's Armor and Oracle's Robe. Furthermore, if you plan on making it to the end of the optional endgame-tier dungeon Crossbone Isle, it is recommended that you play far enough into Venus Lighthouse that you can collect all of its treasures (such as the Gaia Blade) before departing back for Suhalla Desert. In each of these cases, whenever you need to make it back into Venus Lighthouse, you will have to travel back north through Lalivero and enter Babi Lighthouse first.
Subsequent visit
When the final boss is defeated atop the aerie of Venus Lighthouse, the resulting string of cutscenes will eventually bring the party back to Lalivero in Faran's house, with one further cutscene that triggers once you walk out of the house giving you the Black Orb important item. This begins something of a tradition for the Golden Sun series, where – like in each following game – you can freely walk around the town while it is revised as its "epilogue version", with new gossip and Mind Read-able thoughts for all the NPCs present. It is not possible to take either exit out into the overworld because of a sign blocking the north exit and a recurring cutscene that takes place whenever you try to walk out the south exit; as Garet will remind you each time, your objective is to enter the northwest building, which was previously guarded by a Tolbian soldier.
The northwest building contains a wharf that leads to what the game categorizes as a separate location called "Lemurian ship", where you can see the outline of the ship submerged underwater. Only while you are fairly close to the edge of the wooden bridge will the Black Orb gain its Use effect, which raises the ship and automatically initiates the final cutscenes that lead to the end credits. After everything plays out, the game will give you an opportunity to save a Clear Data Save File for use with the data transfer system, letting you transfer the current party's statistics, sidequest progression, and items into a game file of Golden Sun: The Lost Age.
Since Golden Sun is the only game in the series where data can be transferred into a later installment, Lalivero becomes particularly significant among "epilogue towns" in the series. It offers you the opportunity to use the shops to revise your party's gear and inventory prior to the creation of the Clear Data Save File, and you can stuff your open inventory slots with items such as the Lure Cap and a stockpile of Lucky Medals. (This is less important if you are not planning on using the Gold Password and are only transferring party levels and event data.)
On the other hand, Lalivero is also the only "epilogue town" that allows the player to save the game in it before initiating the ending cutscenes. This is uniquely perilous in that it permanently locks the player out of revisiting earlier settlements and dungeons to collect missing treasures and complete leftover events that would result in bonus events in the second game. Ideally, you would only save a game file set in the epilogue version of Lalivero, or a Clear Data Save File, in a different slot from a game file saved prior to the final boss.
Vendors
Lalivero's Inn is located in the vaguely pink building northwest of the purple pond with the obelisk and charges a fee amounting to 25 coins per party member, totaling 100 coins.

History
At some unspecified point before Isaac’s party arrives in Tolbi, Babi sent a group of his soldiers to Lalivero to build a lighthouse (this later became known as Babi Lighthouse). Presumably at Babi’s orders, the Tolbi soldiers forced the people of Lalivero to build Babi Lighthouse by taking Sheba captive. Sheba was taken to Tolbi where she remained until after Colosso.
After Colosso comes to an end, Babi has his soldiers escort Sheba back to Lalivero. Unfortunately they were unable to pass through the Suhalla Desert and lost Sheba in the sandstorm. As it turned out, Sheba was rescued by Saturos and Menardi, who then added her to their group of captives. Shortly before Isaac and Co. reached Lalivero, Saturos’ group arrived and forced their way through so as to take the Tunnel Ruins beneath Babi Lighthouse that lead into Venus Lighthouse. Having noticed Sheba, Faran followed them. However, he and his men were unable to enter the ruins, so Sheba’s fate is ultimately placed in the hands of Isaac’s team.
After Venus Lighthouse is lit, Sheba falls of the side of the lighthouse only for the water level to rise and sweep her and Felix out to sea. While Isaac and Co. search for Jenna, Faran and the people of Lalivero spread out to try and find Sheba. Without either search party having any success, the two groups regroup in Lalivero. Before leaving again, Isaac’s party stays just long enough to receive a gift from Iodem: Babi’s Black Orb, which is needed to sail the ship he used to leave Lemuria. The ship in question just happened to be docked in Lalivero. With a new boat in tow, Isaac and friends depart in search of both Lemuria and Jenna.
Trivia
- It is possible to wedge Isaac between the upper-left corner of the purple pond and the boy randomly wandering in front of the Inn in a way that makes it no longer possible for either character to move. Saving and reloading the file does not free Isaac from this wedge, which can easily give the impression that this is a game-breaking bug. The official Sanctum Trick can be used when reloading the game file to make Isaac respawn in the town's Sanctum, but most first-time players will not be aware of this because instructions on how to perform it (holding the L shoulder button and Start while loading the game) are not documented in either the game or the manual.
- In The Lost Age, Lalivero's overworld icon is removed even though Venus Lighthouse and Babi Lighthouse's icons remain visible, despite none of the three being possible to visit by ship. Many other locations from the first game receive a similar treatment and evidently have had their icons removed so as not to confuse players who hadn't played the first title – but unlike most of those cases, it is possible to see the exposed land formerly occupied by Lalivero's icon during normal play. It can be seen by holding the L shoulder button to zoom out the view while either directly north of Babi Lighthouse's icon or at the east coast of the continent, but its absence is far more conspicuous during the ending credits sequence of the game, which shows sweeping shots of each of the Elemental Lighthouses and their surroundings.
Cultural references
Lalivero is based on Lalibela, Ethiopia. The Church of St. George, a UNESCO world heritage site in the city, is known as Beta Giyorgis in the local Amharic language – a name shared with the Japanese name for Faran, Giyorgis. Furthermore, this town was once an important city in the Kingdom of Aksum, which also was home to the Biblical Queen of Sheba, a clear relationship to Faran's daughter by adoption, Sheba.
Lalivero seems to derive influences from other sites related with the Ancient Near East, specifically the Egyptian Empire and the Arabian Peninsula. Alexandria, the centerpiece of knowledge in Ptolemaic Egypt, was known not only for its great library but also for the Great Lighthouse, which could have inspired the Venus Lighthouse or the Babi Lighthouse. An Egyptian-style Obelisk sits in the center of town. The geography of the region is reminiscent of the Nile Delta in Egypt, and the town of Lalivero sits on the similarly named Nol River.
Furthermore, the appearance, name, and story of the construction of Babi's Lighthouse, referred to as a Tower to challenge the might of the gods by the people of Lalivero, reflect the myth of the Tower of Babel. The Venus Ruins upon which the Tower of Babi sits look remarkably similar to Medieval artwork of the Tower of Babil. In both stories, the lighthouse is struck down after climbing too high, and the ruler who ordered the tower built eventually dies.
