Dirge enemy line
The Dirge, Foul Dirge, and Vile Dirge are enemies that are randomly battled in each game in the Golden Sun series. These monsters, which more accurately resemble bats than the Bat enemy line, are palette swaps of each other that have differing levels of power and defense and are fought in different locations in the games.
In Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Dirge
A Dirge (ジャンプラット Jump Rat) is a tan-colored variant that is level 11 in Golden Sun and level 18 in Golden Sun: The Lost Age. In Golden Sun, the Dirge is first battled throughout Fuchin Falls Cave, and subsequently Mogall Forest, the overworld region of Angara encompassing the exit to Mogall Forest and the entrance to Lamakan Desert, and throughout Altin Peak. In The Lost Age, it is fought only through Kibombo Mountains.
While the Dirge does not have the highest HP among the monsters in Fuchin Falls Cave, it has the highest Agility rating, and for this it may be equivalent in threat level to the Bone Fighter. In The Lost Age, it is definitely one of the less threatening monsters at Kibombo Mountains.
A Dirge is especially likely to be affected by Delusion-inflicting and Stun-inducing effects. Its statistics are as follows:
Name | HP | PP | Attack | Defense | Agility | Luck |
Dirge | 91 | 0 | 122 | 32 | 60 | 2 |
Elemental Resistances and Levels | Exp | Coins | Item Dropped | Drop Rate
127 (Lv 1) 72 (Lv 1) 48 (Lv 1) 7 (Lv 2) | 47 | 61 | Nut | 1/16 |
A Dirge uses the following battle commands with low intelligence:

Flying Attack | 2/8 (25%) |
110 Power | Enemy ability where the user charges forward very quickly to deal one or two orange claw swipes in a row at a targeted Adept. Deals a Jupiter-aligned standard physical attack that has a chance to deal double the end result. |
Foul Dirge
A Foul Dirge (スカイラット Sky Rat) is a purple-colored level 18 variant. In Golden Sun, the Foul Dirge is randomly battled in the overworld region surrounding Tolbi, and within nearby Altmiller Cave.
The Foul Dirge has the highest Agility rating in both areas where it can be fought, but in Altmiller Cave it is quite outranked in damage output and sturdiness by the Dread Hound and Golem. Its Swift Strike enemy ability can do over 100 damage if it manages to connect with its effect, but this is rare to happen because of how uncommon it is for the monster to even use the ability in place of a normal attack.
A Foul Dirge is especially likely to be affected by Delusion-inflicting and Stun-inducing effects. Its statistics are as follows:
Name | HP | PP | Attack | Defense | Agility | Luck |
Foul Dirge | 149 | 0 | 177 | 46 | 120 | 2 |
Elemental Resistances and Levels | Exp | Coins | Item Dropped | Drop Rate

Swift Strike | 2/8 (25%) |
110 Power | Enemy ability where the user charges forward very quickly to deal one or three orange claw swipes in a row at a targeted Adept. Deals a Jupiter-aligned standard physical attack with 15 damage points added to the end result, and then there is a chance that end result will be tripled. |
Vile Dirge
A Vile Dirge (ウィングラット Wing Rat) is a light-blue-colored variant that is level 21 in Golden Sun and level 30 in Golden Sun: The Lost Age. In Golden Sun, the Vile Dirge is ideally first battled in the lower cavernous areas of Lunpa Fortress, then in the overworld area of Gondowan encompassing Gondowan Passage and the rest of the game's locales, including within Suhalla Desert. In The Lost Age, Vile Dirges are, interestingly enough, one of the stock monsters that you fight while sailing across the Great Western Sea, rather than on land.
In Golden Sun in Lunpa Fortress the Vile Dirge is as fast as the Rat Warrior and has the same stats everywhere else except HP. In Gondowan it is outperformed by the Dirty Ape, and in Suhalla Desert it has still the highest Agility of the monsters, but is much weaker offensively and defensively than several other monsters there. In The Lost Age, it is severely outperformed by the other monsters you can encounter in the Western Sea.
A Vile Dirge is especially likely to be affected by Delusion-inflicting and Stun-inducing effects. Its statistics are as follows:
Name | HP | PP | Attack | Defense | Agility | Luck |
Vile Dirge | 173 | 0 | 228 | 56 | 120 | 2 |
