Raging Heat (ブレイズ, Blaze), Fiery Abyss (アビスブレイズ, Abyss Blaze), and Dire Inferno (ハーデスブレイズ, Hades Blaze) are a series of offensive Mars Psynergies featured in Golden Sun: The Lost Age and Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.

Basic Characteristics

Raging Heat, Fiery Abyss, and Dire Inferno are offensive, ranged Psynergies. The total amount of damage is determined by comparing the user's Mars Power to the target's Mars Resistance and using this value to modify the base power of the particular Psynergy.

Visually, each stage of the series features a large ornate seal forming above the enemies. A large fireball then drops onto the opponents. In Dark Dawn, the color of the seal changes progressively with each stage, from an orange color to an intense red. In both cases, the size of the fireball increases with each stage.

Damage calculation example

Elemental Power attacks such as Raging Heat, Fiery Abyss, and Dire Inferno use a set base power as the base damage to be modified. For example, the base power of Dire Inferno is 200. Thus, an unmodified Dire Inferno would do around 200 points of damage.

Dire Inferno's attack takes this base damage value and uses it in the following equation:

final damage = (base damage) * (1 + (User's Mars Power - Enemy's Mars Resistance) / 200)

To word this in prose, Raging Heat, Fiery Abyss, and Dire Inferno take the base damage of the particular attack, and then modifies this by how much higher or lower the user's Mars Power is than the target's Mars Resistance. The difference between the user's Mars Power and the target's Mars Resistance is then divided by 200, then 1 is added to this, resulting in what can be called the "elemental damage multiplier". This number is what the Psynergies' damage is multiplied by.

For example, if an Adept with a Mars Power of 150 casts Dire Inferno on a monster with a Mars Resistance of 50:

  • damage = (base damage) * (1 + (Power - Resistance) / 200)
  • damage = (200) * (1 + (150 - 50) / 200)
  • damage = (200) * (1 + 100 / 200)
  • damage = (200) * (1 + 0.5)
  • damage = 200 * 1.50
  • damage = 300

Therefore, a Dire Inferno cast under these circumstances would deal approximately 300 points of damage to the targeted enemy. Since Dire Inferno is a ranged Psynergy, adjacent targets take a percentage of the total damage, with the percentage decreasing as distance from the main target increases.

Availability

The availability of the Raging Heat series changes drastically between games. In The Lost Age, the series is unique to the Dark Mage class series, an item-dependent class. The class is available to any Adept that has equipped the Tomegathericon. Since the item is currently only available in The Lost Age, only Adepts from that game can access the Dark Mage class.

In Dark Dawn, the series is now unique to the Curse Mage class series, a dual-elemental class unique to the Venus Adept Himi. Himi can enter the class when she has Mars Djinn Set to her. In either case, Raging Heat is learned at Level 9, while Fiery Abyss is learned at Level 22, and Dire Inferno is learned at Level 53.

Analysis

General: The Raging Heat series can be considered to be a counterpart to the Gaia Psynergy series and the Roaring Dragon Psynergy series. The Raging Heat series is the strongest Power-based Mars Psynergy series, and is learned at similar levels as the Gaia series. Its raw power makes it a good choice for endgame battling. Unlike the Gaia series, the classes that learn the Raging Heat series have high PP multipliers, meaning that Dire Inferno's high PP cost has less of an effect.

By Game

Golden Sun: The Lost Age: The Raging Heat series has the advantage of being available to any Adept, giving the player a nice variety of potential users. The series will be used alongside the single-target Call series in most situations, with Raging Heat softening up groups and Call finishing off stragglers. The Big Bang Gloves can be equipped to increase the power of the series, should the player so desire.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn: The series is Himi's strongest ranged Psynergy in her Curse Mage class and the class's only offensive Mars series. The class's Djinn setup means that she will have higher Mars Power than Adepts in The Lost Age, making it more powerful. The series is great for softening up groups of targets, and can be used alongside Himi's powerful single-target series, the Undead Curse Psynergies, to take out large groups. It is especially good against the monsters of the Grave Eclipse, all of whom are susceptible to Mars to a degree.
