Yegelos

From Golden Sun Universe

Yegelos (イエグロス, Yegros) was an ancient figure in the legends of Contigo. Living in the world's ancient past, back when Contigo was part of a larger culture of Jupiter Adepts called the Anemos, Yegelos was something of a national hero to the Anemos. The legends remember him as a handsome man who was a natural warrior who loved to fight.

An ancient war was fought between the people of Shaman Village and Anemos, which raged for a long time. Eventually, the two powers chose their respective champions to fight on their behalf, with the Adept Yegelos fighting for the Anemos and the powerful mystic Hoabna fighting on behalf of Shaman Village. The two warriors battled each other at a site located in Hesperia, which served as the inspiration for the creation of Trial Road, a gauntlet designed to commemorate their legendary battle. Due to various events, the details of which are unknown, Yegelos and Hoabna grew to respect each other and became friends, and the conflict between Anemos and Shaman ceased.

Following the end of the war, Hoabna and Yegelos forged a great friendship, and their respective homelands followed suit. To signify this newfound friendship, they exchanged national treasures for mutual safekeeping. Yegelos entrusted a magic gemstone, the Hover Jade, to Hoabna and the Shaman Village, with this Jade being an object infused with the Psynergy-based power of flight which the Anemos were famous for; meanwhile, Hoabna entrusted a sacred staff called the Shaman's Rod to Contigo. The two heroes made a vow to each other: In the future, should a descendant of Yegelos return the rod to Shaman Village, the bearer would be granted the Hover Jade in exchange.

It is often assumed that Ivan is a modern-day descendant of Yegelos, as he hails from Contigo and was the inheritor of the Shaman's Rod. However, in The Lost Age, the individual that ends up fulfilling the vow between the two figures is Sheba, who is both similar to Ivan as a Jupiter Adept and is implied to be a descendant of the Anemos, just as the descendants of Yegelos would be - however, Sheba's relation to the Anemos and to Yegelos himself is never directly confirmed.

Name Origin

Yegelos is probably a corruption of Yegros and a reference to the Paraguayan independence soldier and one of the two first Consuls of the Republic of Paraguay, Fulgencio Yegros. Like Yegelos, Yegros was a military, rather than political, leader, and founded the first military academy in independent Paraguay.
