<includeonly> categories on directory templates
I think there should be a discussion on this first before we go around deleting all manually-placed weapon categories from the weapon pages just because the weapon directory templates themselves could automatically include the same categories on the articles they're put on. The last time you added an includeonly version of the Long Swords category on the Long Swords template, I immediately reverted it [1] and put my reasoning in the edit summary. (Though, while I said in the summary that "that was something we removed and are staying away from", admittedly I don't remember if there was an actual discussion where that decision had ever been announced...)
But anyway, my personal argument against relying strictly on the directory templates to be the providers of their common categories was that, for example, it makes any page the Long Sword template is put on count as an official entry in the Long Swords category no matter what that page might actually be. Of course there aren't really any cases right now where the Long Sword template is posted on a page that isn't directly related to long swords, but... I don't think we can actually rule out the possibility of such a page ever being created in the future. There technically could end up being some sort of non-long-sword-related page concept accepted where the Long Swords template is included on the page, just because it's useful to have the template as a conveniently pre-constructed directory of the long swords in that spot (with the added bonus that the directory doesn't clutter up the article syntax itself because it just references the template with a bracket tag), but it would otherwise not be right for that page to actually have Category:Long Swords on it at all.
I suppose I don't care too much if it's agreed on by other users that it's okay for the directory templates to force categories on their articles despite future potentialities, but I'd have to see you and some other users pitch in first. Erik the Appreciator (talk) 19:44, 19 May 2013 (CDT)
- I'm with Erik on this one. Since not every page the template would be on would be a Long Sword, and just the fact that I'd prefer to see which categories a particular page is in while I'm editing it. Not too big but, neither is adding a category to a page. ~ dkpat (talk) 21:40, 19 May 2013 (CDT)
- Just for the record, I'm with Erik too, although in my case it's more paranoia: What happens if the templates get used on a page that shouldn't go on the category? I realize it's a fairly big "if", but better safe than sorry. The World's Hungriest Paperweight (talk) 21:44, 19 May 2013 (CDT)
