Talk:Monster

Animals

Quick question. Are monsters and animals technicaly the same thing? By that I mean things like the Zombie monster line are clearly monsters but are things like the bears and wolves are just wild animals? Because I can't figure this one out.Zabbeth 14:47, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Mmm, tough question. Usually, when I think of "animals" in Golden Sun I think of non-monster animals, but lots of monsters look like animals and could be considered the same thing. I guess it could go either way if you try hard enough. The world's hungriest paperweight 15:01, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

My guess is both, they talk about animals with Maha like the caterpillar, but with monsters like Red demon and Mad vermon those are monsters. In the game the people may consider monsters the same as animals.

I'm going to rename all "monster line" articles and categories into "enemy line" while rewriting them, and also refer to enemy-exclusive abilities as "enemy skills" instead of monster skills. The simple reason is that not all enemies are monsters, and with more human enemies having appeared in Dark Dawn, any future game is likely to have even more, which will make calling them "monsters" all the more unwise. The categories I'm proposing are below:

  • Category:Enemy lines
  • Category:[GBA/Dark Dawn] enemies
  • Category:Enemies exclusive to Golden Sun
  • Category:Enemies exclusive to Golden Sun: The Lost Age
  • Category:Enemies exclusive to Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
  • Category:[GBA/Dark Dawn] Enemies with [high/low] [element here] resistance
  • Category:[GBA/Dark Dawn] Enemies that drop [limited/unique] items
  • Category:Psynergy-capable enemies in [GBA/Dark Dawn]

I'm also planning to remove the whole Monsters with healing abilities category, and putting in an Enemies with multiple actions per turn category in its place.

As for this page, though, I think a separate page on "enemies" should cover the gameplay concept of enemies you battle in the RPGs (which is what the category list represents), while this "monsters" page should cover monsters on Weyard from more of a lore perspective. This all sounds appropriate to me. I wasn't really aware we had a healing monster category, though I do agree multiple turn is much more useful. Though I'm not sure how much Lore there is available to the monsters in the game, it's worth a shot. ~ dkpat 23:07, 19 April 2012 (CDT)Reply[reply]
Dkpat pretty much summed up my thoughts. By the way, should we have separate categories for two-action monsters and three-action monsters? Hmmm, maybe we should start by making the base category and seeing how large it is. Still, I thought I'd throw that idea out on the table. I don't think there's any need to split up turns like that because I'm pretty sure there's not a lot of enemies with multiple turns to begin with. The base category would have to be fairly small, there's that few of them.
Now, because I think it would help the viewer to have category screens where GBA and Dark Dawn enemies do not populate the same list, I'm also thinking of splitting the elemental resistances, drops, and Psynergy-capable categories into GBA and Dark Dawn versions. Though I don't think I'll do that with the turns category because I predict it to have so few entries in it to begin with. Erik the Appreciator 11:30, 20 April 2012 (CDT)Reply[reply]
Oh hey, I could install an extension that will make this a lot easier for you. text replace simple one stop operations to change all designated text to specified text. ~ dkpat 11:56, 20 April 2012 (CDT)Reply[reply]
I'm not sure if that will exactly work with what exactly I'm doing, since this will involve going through the categories on redirect pages to update them with the Dark Dawn factor. I would have to remove various categories and add various categories to each article and redirect - a lot of work that would have to be done with the precision of doing it hands-on. I installed it anyways, admins and up have access to use it, and it's located here Special:ReplaceText. It may come in handy at some point.~ dkpat 14:00, 20 April 2012 (CDT)Reply[reply]
Yeah, sounds good to have. Erik the Appreciator 14:01, 20 April 2012 (CDT)Reply[reply]
