As in many video games, the Golden Sun series is filled with many enemies to obstruct a player's progress. Many of these enemies appear at random while exploring certain areas and are technically optional, but some appear in predetermined locations and must be defeated to continue the game.

Most enemies, including some bosses, come in groups that have similar appearances, traits, and abilities. More often than not, the individual members of these "enemy lines" have differing levels of overall power, with the stronger members appearing in the later stages of a game.
