Town City, or National Capital?

The Encyclopedia implies that Kaocho is a separate nation from its motherland Sana. Our article consistently calls it a Town.

The other national capitals in the game (Ayuthay, Belinsk, Yamata, and Tonfon) are all alternatively referred to as City or Capital in the Japanese version (save Champa, which has its own issue of whether it's still a village or is a town or city but currently is just a refugee camp outside of what was a village in Book II) – while Harapa, Passaj, Saha, and Border are specifically referred to as Towns and Carver's Camp (Jp: Woodman), Kolima Village, Harun Island, and Te Rya Village are specifically referred to as Villages; Port Rago I'm not sure and Patcher's Place (Tinker's Shop) is even smaller than a village, being a essentially a trading-post.

In any case, Books I & II have a very consistent pattern in the Japanese versions of calling every non-minor settlement either a Town or a Village (save Lemuria which is a City/Capital akin to the nation-state capitals in this game). Only Bilibin, Kalay, Tolbi, Lalivero, Madra, and Alhafra were towns, the rest of the locations with inns & shops were villages. Oh, and Apojii I guess which, while essentially a village in form, is consistently called an Island or collection of Islands in both languages.

I just want to make sure that we're correct in calling Kaocho a town and not a city or even a village (albeit one with a palace/temple complex, a la Vale, Imil, Xian, Garoh, Kibombo, Izumo, Contigo, and Prox).

I'm going to play Dark Dawn again in both languages once I've finished my replays of Books I & II on NSO (and in Japanese on NSO as well), so I can double check the language when I get there, but I wanted to open up this discussion in case anyone else has some insight here.

There's probably all sorts of cases on the wiki where out-of-date articles inaccurately call some settlements towns, so any instances where looking at the Japanese version's terminology would lead to a correction should have that correction applied immediately. Will do so. Dark Dawn's a bit more obscure with its terminology, and the translations don't help when they use multiple terms for the same thing in the official translations for some NPC dialogue. But will keep an eye out and when I get to Kaocho in my DD replays I'll double check the dialogue in both versions. Marandahir (talk) 20:37, 7 February 2024 (CST)Reply[reply]
