Psy Drain (エナジードレイン, Energy Drain) is a unique Jupiter-aligned Psynergy found throughout the Golden Sun series.

Basic Characteristics

Psy Drain is unique amongst Psynergy for costing 0 Psynergy Points — not surprising since it is used to restore PP. Psy Drain has a base power rating of 15 and a range of 1.

While most of the classes learn Psy Drain at level 39, the Ranger and the Pilgrim learn it slightly later at level 41. The Medium, on the other hand, learns it at a lower level than usual, 36. Because of the wide array of class series that it this available to, it can be learned by all Adepts. All classes that learn Psy Drain also learn the related Drain Psynergy at an earlier level.

In Golden Sun, the icon for this Psynergy remains unchanged from the Japanese version, showing the letters EP rather than PP. In the original language, where 'Psynergy' is simply called 'Energy'. For The Lost Age, Nintendo of America revised the icon to show PP for clarity. Dark Dawn avoids this confusion entirely with its new icon that lacks letters, at the slight risk of causing confusion with the icon for the related Drain Psynergy.

Analysis

Psy Drain being cast in Golden Sun

Although seemingly a very good Psynergy, several things detract from Psy Drain. First is the high level that an Adept learns it at; by the time many of them get this, their pool of PP is generally large and should not be running out all that often. Secondly, it is mostly only available to the mage-type Adepts, giving them an even larger pool of PP than the warrior Adepts, who could use this more. Finally the Psynergy doesn’t always work and the amount of PP that it nets you is not that much, although the fact that it also drains PP from the foe is a slight advantage. To make a long story short, you are better off using alternate PP-restoring methods, such as Psy Crystals or equipment like the Psychic Circlet.

As with the related Drain Psynergy, the Curse Mage is the only class that learns Psy Drain without otherwise requiring elemental levels in Jupiter.
