Atteka

From Golden Sun Universe
Atteka, a smaller island continent, is located just west of Gondowan and has relations with Hesperia to the north.

Atteka (アテカ大陸, Ateca Continent) is the southern continent in the Great Western Sea.

Geography

The only prominent landmarks on Atteka are Jupiter Lighthouse and Contigo, both located in the centre of the landmass and are only accessible by sailing through Atteka Inlet. A minor location, the Atteka Cavern, is located on the southernmost peninsula of Atteka, and is reachable only after acquiring the Wings of Anemos. Contigo is notable for being the birthplace of Ivan.

History

Long before the main storyline of the Golden Sun games, Atteka and Hesperia were in a constant state of war. Though the war was not elaborated on very much, at the end of the war, a truce was declared where the sacred treasure of Atteka, the Hover Jade, and the sacred treasure of Hesperia, the Shaman's Rod, were traded for a peace agreement. It wouldn't be until Felix's party appeared in Hesperia (and later, Atteka) that the treasures returned to their rightful continents.

Another prominent event in Atteka's past is the fact that the civilization of Anemos, the Jupiter equivalent of Lemuria, used to live on this continent. Past tense is used because at some stage in Weyard's ancient past, prior to the sealing of Alchemy, Contigo legends say that the Anemos utilised the Hover Psynergy to lift their entire civilization into the sky. According the legends, this civilization eventually become the moon, leaving behind only a large crater and the Anemos Sanctum as proof of their existence. This legend strongly implies that the Jupiter Adept, Sheba, (who fell from the sky as a child, landing safely in Lalivero, where she was raised) is of Anemos heritage, though this is never directly confirmed.

Post Golden Sun

As indicated in dialogue at the Psynergy Training Grounds, following the Golden Sun event Atteka became part of western Gondowan.

Real World Inspiration

It geographically resembles South America, though the architecture of its residents does not. The continent's name may be a play on Aztec, a civilization that existed in Central America and held many prophecies, as the Attekites do.

Glitches

First Flight Cutscene Glitch

Moving Felix to this position prior to seeing the first flight cutscene will improperly trigger the cutscene's activation.

This glitch requires the player to have not seen the "First Flight" cutscene which triggers after the player flies with the ship for the first time. It is possible to land the boat on the grey ground and have exit onto this. Due to a collision oversight after Atteka's geography is updated, Felix can walk onto the ground as depicted in the image to the right. Moving Felix to the indicated position will trigger the cutscene despite Felix not being in the boat at the time. The game will move the boat to the intended post-cutscene position and will send Felix to (0,0) on the world map.

Felix while in the 'boat' state hovering near Crossbone Isle.

As soon as the cutscene ends the player will gain control of Felix and the camera will pan to (0,0) (which is North West of the current camera location). In this state Felix inherits the properties of the boat; that is Felix can walk on water (but not ground), fly while draining PP, and disembark from the 'boat' onto land. Disembarking from the 'boat' in this state will cause Felix to disembark from the boat located near Atteka inlet. The player can use Felix's 'boat' state to fly around the out of bounds landscape. Places that are accessible include the prologue sequence where Idejima is severed from Gondowan, the mass of water where Crossbone Isle is located, and the area out of bounds around Prox. In this out of bounds landscape there are a number of 'junk' doors that lead to various places in the world map; these are Daila, Atteka Inlet, Sea of Time, Yampi Desert (Alhafra side) and the Northern Reaches. Saving and Loading the game will refresh Felix's state to normal Felix and will lose his boat properties. Felix's spite will be bugged and will not turn correctly after this glitch has been used.

For an unknown reason, when the camera pans across large distances collision sporadically becomes disabled. This is important to the initiate exploration as if the player does not move from the original position the player will be stuck. Disembarking as 'boat' Felix and re-entering the boat will cause the camera to pan to the boat location near Atteka Inlet. Forcing this behavaior at strategic locations effectively allows the player to fly anywhere on the map provided the camera is panning long enough to disable collision for a sufficient amount of time. Here is a video showing how this can be used to fly to Prox.

It is extremely likely that the player will get stuck out of bounds at some point. There are many instances of one-way collision that will prevent the player from moving once passing through. The only way to continue with the game is to do a data recall to return to the last visited Sanctum.

The Magic River

The Magic River glitch creates a temporary water bridge into the heart of Atteka.

This glitch requires the player to have lit Jupiter Lighthouse so that the Atteka geography gets updated. Loading into the world map (via an encounter or loading a save game) within a precise area will cause ocean tiles to be loaded into improper places. This forms a water bridge that allows the player access to the heart of Atteka via boat. There are two interesting applications of this glitch. The first is that it allows the player convenient access to Core. Usually the player must trek through a heavily forested area which is likely to result in many encounters. The glitch allows the player to fly or sail directly to the area where Core can be found making this journey easier. The second application is an amusing model glitch. Since the boat can be taken into the heart of Atteka it is possible for the boat to interact with the north side of Atteka inlet. When this happens the player's model becomes that of the female NPC that usually inhabits Atteka inlet, as can be seen in this image.

A possible area where the magic river glitch can occur.

To perform the glitch the player must navigate to a particular horizontal strip of land after Jupiter Lighthouse has been lit. The most useful place to do this is indicated in the image to the right but the horiztonal strip extends much further than that to the left and right. The boat should be parked in line or above the horizontal strip. While the player is in this strip of land they must either (i) Save/Load or (ii) get an encounter in this piece of land and flee or win the battle. This will cause the improper loading of the ocean tiles. The player can now hop into the boat and fly north and access the magic river. Opening any menu, opening the map or zooming out will cause the river to disappear even if you are currently in the river. Sailing away from the river or getting an encounter will cause the river to disappear as well. If the player gets stuck then performing a data recall may be necessary. An explanation of what is happening in the glitch can be found in this image.

There are two ways to leave the heart of Atteka after performing this glitch. The first is to perform a data recall which will send the player to the last visited sanctum and return the boat to an accessible location. The second is to simply enter Atteka inlet as Felix and leave the usual way.
