Salamander enemy line
The Salamander, Earth Lizard, and Thunder Lizard are enemies that are randomly fought throughout each game in the Golden Sun series. These monsters are palette swaps of each other that have differing levels of power and defense and are fought in different locations in the games. In the Game Boy Advance games, they resemble real-world salamanders that are larger in size, but they are slightly redesigned in Dark Dawn to stand on their hind legs and feature rudimentary wings.

[edit] Salamander
A Salamander is a variant with violet skin, a green underbelly and blue claws and mouth, and it is level 14 in Golden Sun and level 19 in The Lost Age. In Golden Sun the Salamander can be fought in Lamakan Desert, while in The Lost Age it is located in the Gabomba Statue.
In the first game the Salamander takes much more punishment than any of the other monsters it is fought alongside, though it is the slowest in the desert. It is pretty much the "standout" of the random monsters in Lamakan Desert, but in The Lost Age it is totally outperformed by the Red Demon (but it still has the second highest HP rating of the monsters there).
A Salamander's statistics are as follows:
| Name | HP | PP | Attack | Defense | Agility | Luck |
| Salamander | 212 | 18 | 158 | 49 | 50 | 6 |
| Elemental Resistances | Turns | Exp | Coins | Item Dropped | Drop Rate | |
| |
1 | 84 | 190 | |
1/16 | |
A Salamander uses these battle commands:
| Command | Chance to use | Elem. Stats used with * | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack | 2/8 (25%) |
{{{command1usedwith}}} | Standard physical attack. |
| Fire Breath | 2/8 (25%) |
{{{command2usedwith}}} | Enemy ability that generates a mass of fire at the party of Adepts. Deals a Mars-aligned attack with a power rating of 60 range of 3 (the Adepts at either side of the specifically targeted Adept will only take 50% of the attack's force, instead of the normal 80%, however). Salamander uses this with a Mars elemental power rating of 125. |
| Fireball | 2/8 (25%) |
{{{command3usedwith}}} | Psynergy costing 12 PP that causes a group of fire balls to spread out from the user and strike the party. Deals a Mars-aligned attack with 65 power and 5 range. Salamander uses this with a Mars elemental power rating of 125. |
| Blast | 1/8 (12.5%) |
{{{command4usedwith}}} | Psynergy costing 7 PP that generates a large but brief explosion at the party's position. Deals a Mars-aligned attack with 40 power and 3 range. Salamander uses this with a Mars elemental power rating of 125. |
| Guard | 1/8 (12.5%) |
{{{command5usedwith}}} | Psynergy costing 3 PP that temporarily increases the Defense of the user or its ally by 25%. |
[edit] Earth Lizard
An Earth Lizard is a level 28 variant with green skin, a blue underbelly, violet claws, and an orange mouth. In Golden Sun only two Earth Lizards are fought throughout the entire game, as one scripted boss encounter that occurs on the seventh "dungeon floor" of the optional Crossbone Isle as soon as you try to enter the door to that floor's puzzle room.
The encounter with two Earth Lizards can be expected to be about as difficult as the "sub-boss battle" on the sixth floor above with the Chimeras, and most likely more difficult than the battle in the floor above with the single Lizard King. In particular, Acid Breath can pile on damage rather well. But this battle can most likely be conducted "as usual" and be won, and like the other sub-boss encounters in Crossbone Isle this battle can be "cheaply" won by having everyone use a 4-Djinn Summon on the first turn to annihilate the lizards.
An Earth Lizard's statistics are as follows:
| Name | HP | PP | Attack | Defense | Agility | Luck |
| Earth Lizard | 1550 | 48 | 278 | 97 | 102 | 17 |
| Elemental Resistances | Turns | Exp | Coins | Item Dropped | Drop Rate | |
| |
1 | 545 | 920 | |
1/1 | |
An Earth Lizard uses these battle commands:
| Command | Chance to use | Elem. Stats used with * | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acid Blessing | 88/256 (34.4%) |
{{{command1usedwith}}} | Enemy ability where the user generates a cloud of pink gas at the party of Adepts. Deals a Mars-aligned attack with a power rating of 190 and a range of 3 (the Adepts at either side of the specifically targeted Adept will only take 50% of the attack's force, instead of the normal 80%, however), and each hit Adept has a chance to have their Defense temporarily lowered by 12.5%. Earth Lizard uses this with a Mars elemental power rating of 95. |
| Clay Spire | 53/256 (20.7%) |
{{{command2usedwith}}} | Psynergy costing 13 PP that causes a group of large stalactites to fall down from above onto the party of Adepts and shatter. Deals a Venus-aligned attack with a power rating of 85 and a range of 3. Earth Lizard uses this with a Venus elemental power rating of 120. |
| Quake Sphere | 35/256 (13.7%) |
{{{command3usedwith}}} | Psynergy costing 15 PP that causes three rectangular sections of ground underneath the party jolt upward and retract into the ground quickly thrice in succession. Deals a Venus-aligned attack with a power rating of 65 and a range of 7. Earth Lizard uses this with a Venus elemental power rating of 120. |
| Mother Gaia | 29/256 (11.3%) |
{{{command4usedwith}}} | Psynergy costing 17 PP that strikes multiple Adepts with an eruption of earth-based energy and rocks from the ground. Deals a Venus-aligned attack with a power rating of 100 and a range of 5. Earth Lizard uses this with a Venus elemental power rating of 120. |
| Attack | 29/256 (10.9%) |
{{{command5usedwith}}} | Standard physical attack. |
| Cure Well | 23/256 (9%) |
{{{command6usedwith}}} | Psynergy that restores roughly 150 HP to the user or an ally monster. Since Earth Lizard uses this with a Venus elemental power rating of 120, in practice it heals around 180 HP. |

[edit] Thunder Lizard
A Thunder Lizard is a level 28 variant with purple skin, a light green underbelly and orange claws and mouth. In Golden Sun the Thunder Lizard is fought randomly in the later "dungeon" portion of Venus Lighthouse as one of the "final" random monsters of the game. Two also appear as part of a scripted battle on the eighth floor of Crossbone Isle, as sidekicks to the Poison Toad.
The Thunder Lizard is one of the toughest random enemies in the original game, right up there with the Grand Golem and Fenrir, because it appears only in the game's final dungeon. Its Storm Breath can pile on a good amount of damage. Its rare drop, the Blessed Mace, is the weapon with the highest physical attack rating that Mia can have in the first game assuming she is not equipped with the Cursed Wicked Mace and the Cleric's Ring, but since it does not have an Unleash effect, many don't consider it as desirable as the Crystal Rod one can just buy in Lalivero. It can, of course, be gotten quickly through abuse of the Random Number Generator.
A Thunder Lizard's statistics are as follows:
| Name | HP | PP | Attack | Defense | Agility | Luck |
| Thunder Lizard | 456 | 0 | 347 | 133 | 134 | 10 |
| Elemental Resistances | Turns | Exp | Coins | Item Dropped | Drop Rate | |
| |
1 | 422 | 221 | |
1/128 | |
A Thunder Lizard uses these battle commands:
| Command | Chance to use | Elem. Stats used with * | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack | 5/8 (62.5%) |
{{{command1usedwith}}} | Standard physical attack. |
| Storm Blessing | 3/8 (37.5%) |
{{{command2usedwith}}} | Enemy ability that generates a stream of purple lightning through the party briefly. Deals a Jupiter-aligned attack with a power rating of 190 range of 3 (the Adepts at either side of the specifically targeted Adept will only take 50% of the attack's force, instead of the normal 80%, however), and each hit Adept has a chance to be afflicted with Stun. Thunder Lizard uses this with a Jupiter elemental power rating of 120. |

[edit] Cultural References
Salamanders are mythical creatures affiliated with the fire element and resemble the real-life amphibians of the same name. The connection between the two originated from old tales in Europe about these amphibians. The Salamanders hid within rotting wood and often remained hidden when humans cut down the wood to use for heating. When wood was put on the fire, the creatures "mysteriously" emerged from the flames.
