I had noticed when Camelot updated their website with an image announcing that they had just released Mario Tennis Open for the 3DS. Conceptually, it isn't a surprise that they would do another Mario sports game following Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, but it got me thinking on what is more likely and what is less likely to happen in the future.

I'd like to think that Mario Tennis Open on the 3DS was a calculated maneuver on the company's part made for the sake of having 3DS-developing experience, useful for when it's time to make Golden Sun 4 on the 3DS, for example. But with that out of the way, do you think their next game would be GS4, or more of other stuff? Keep in mind that each release takes a fairly long while to come out. When I look at Wikipedia's page on them, after they did We Love Golf! on the Wii in 2007, they updated their 2004 GameCube Mario tennis game for the New Play Control series on the Wii in 2008, and then their next title was Dark Dawn all the way late in 2010. And it's only now a year-and-a-half later that their follow-up release just came out.

Based on this pattern, whatever Camelot's next game is going to be, I think it shouldn't be expected until the end of 2013 at the earliest. And therefore, I don't expect them to have anything to show at E3 2012.

My answer
Well, I have mixed ideas. On one hand, I have my inner fanboy who wants them to say something at E3 about Golden Sun 4, but on the other hand theirs my inner realist who is highly skeptical. Though I will say that Golden Sun and The Lost Age DID have a two year gap between them, abd that time has passed. So, I really WANT them to release information, bur I just am not sure it will happen.

Just be patient and wait to see if we get more information. He's right: making an RPG takes a ridiculous amount of time due to needing a plot. (P.S. Geez, what are with all of these emoticons?)

I wouldn't expect a fourth game for a while (especially not if it's on the 3DS).

They just announced that they finished... Mario Golf for 3DS. -.-

I don't think Nintendo will let them do anything but Mario Sports at this point.

Mmm. I suppose I should concede that there might not be any more of the franchise after all...

But, I strangely don't even feel like I'm grasping for straws when I say there's still some logical potential for GS4 to happen afterward. The way the company asked about GS4 after releasing the tennis game on 3DS implies they wouldn't really have even started on GS4 by that point in time eight months ago. Dark Dawn was allegedly a long and involved effort where a lot of different story ideas were discussed and chosen from, and Camelot had told the fans they needed to discuss ideas for GS4's story in a similar vein. If they "just finished" this latest requisite golf game, I get the impression that didn't even take all that long to develop, so... one could probably say this was yet another "biding their time" affair. It doesn't rule GS4 out, but again I don't really feel like being outwardly hopeful for it.

BTW, I get the impression that all of these game choices are strictly made by Camelot itself without being prevented from doing anything specific by Nintendo. Camelot's Mario sports are always in golf/tennis pairs, so perhaps it wouldn't have made much spiritual sense to delay the golf game that much longer after the tennis game, with a big RPG sandwiched in between.
